1991 Chevrolet Astro van - fuel pump.
Hi Steve,
My 1991 Chevrolet Astro van stopped running while I was stopped at a traffic light and has not started since, it will crank over, but will not start.
I was wondering if you could give me some advice on what I should look for. I am thinking fuel filter and that is in the gas tank. Is that hard to fix for a first timer?

Hi Doug,
Thank you for your question. You may be on the right track Doug, you may have a loss of fuel to the engine, but it may be more than just the fuel filter. You may have a bad fuel pump. You need to have the fuel pressure checked, you also need to check for a proper ignition spark, you could have a problem in the ignition system.
If you have low or no fuel pressure most likely the fuel pump is bad. The pump is located in the gas tank and I wouldn’t recommend replacing this yourself if you’re a "First timer," only you know what your skill level and limits are.
Removing the gas tank can be tricky at home because it's heavy and awkward and you don't need a big fuel spill in the driveway! The fuel filter is located outside the tank along the frame rail usually on the left side of the vehicle, this is easy to replace yourself!
If you have no ignition spark then you have a problem in the ignition system-ignition coils and the ignition module are a common problem in these vehicles. Good luck Doug!
