1998 Honda Accord - Check enigne light is on-

Steve,

I have a 1998 Honda Accord with a check engine light on. I used a diagnostic scanner to check for codes.

The following codes are in the system:

P0420 Catalyst system Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) What does that mean and what are they talking about in reference to Bank 1?

P1259 - VTECH System Malfunction (I could not find anything in the manual on this)

P1491 - EGR Valve Lift Insufficient Detected (I assume this means the EGR Valve is bad)

P1456 - EVAP System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank) I hope this means the rubber hose is cracked.

P0401 - EGR Flow Insufficient (Again, I assume the EGR is bad)

Your help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,

It sounds like you are having fun with this one. This is quite a list of codes.

O.k lets start with the PO420. plain and simple , the catalytic converter is bad and will have to be replaced to correct this code. The converter is not filtering the exhaust gases as it should.

Bank 1 is referring to the location , in your case with the 4 cylinder you only have one converter, some engines have more than one converter and they are labeled bank 1 or bank 2.

P1259, this is a code for the VTECH oil pressure switch or solenoid. some electrical testing will need to be done to determine the problem.

P1491, this is a malfunction in the egr valve system. Most likely it is a bad egr valve but there is a possibility of a wiring or computer control problem. Again some testing will need to be done.

P0401- this is also related to the egr system. This means that there is a blockage somewhere in the system and no air flow is getting through the egr. Now, the egr could be causing this problem, but the most likely cause is a plugged egr port in the intake manifold. These ports will have to be checked and cleaned . If they are good then the valve is the problem. This could also be the cause of the P1491.

P1456- This is a problem in the fuel EVAP system. If you see a hose that is cracked you need to replace it for sure. Also check the gas cap. Make sure it is tight and is not damaged in anyway.

This is alot of information to elaborate on so if you have any more detailed questions please let me know.

Thanks again for the question,

Steve
