Car repair question-I want to change the transmission on my 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

The maintence on this car is excellent. My mechanic suggested changing the transmission fluid since then car shifts very hard but no slipping and the car whines.
I normally travel via express way and car drives wonderful. During city driving if I accelerate fast the car shifts fine, when I accelerate slow then steady build in speed hard shifts are felt in the car.
Do you have any idea on what could be wrong and whats needs to be checked?

Hi Marty,
Before I would spend any money having the transmission fluid changed I would
have the cars computer checked for any transmission related codes. This
transmission is computer controlled and if there is a problem in the transmission
electronically then it should set a trouble code in the cars computer.
I have worked at a Chevrolet dealer as a Master technician for a long time
and I am very familiar with this transmission and I have rebuild quite a
number of them.
This transmission does have issues with hard shifts and there is a number
of things that go wrong with them. Some are minor and some are not but usually
they all require internal transmission repairs.
If the whining noise is coming from the transmission then that is a sign
of major internal failure. I know you say that the car shifts fine under
certain conditions but that does not mean you do not have an internal transmission
issue.
Chevrolet has several technical service bulletins on hard shifts and whining
noises for the transmission, so my advice here would be a trip to the dealer.
Unless you know and trust a good transmission repair shop the dealer would
be the best place to have this checked.
