2001 Honda Accord-Transmission shifts hard-P0780.
Hi Steve,
I have a 2001 Honda Accord and the Transmission has PO780 code. The only noticeable malfunction is a hard down shift when accelerating after slowing down.
This does not Happen when you come to a complete
stop and upshifting is smooth and normal.
A local repair shop says its an internal failure and will require overhaul
at $1600.00.
Is it possible that a bad throttle position sensor or speed sensor is causing
this problem? or is this shop shooting straight? I sure hope you have time
to help me out.
Thank you,
John
Hi John,
I always have time to help out if I can, Thank you for the question!
The code you have P0780 is an internal hydraulic problem in the transmission.
I did some research on this trouble code and the repair manual Say's to
replace the torque converter clutch solenoid valve/shift solenoid valve
A, and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves A and B.
In plain English these are the shift solenoids and torque converter solenoids.
These solenoids control the fluid flow to the transmission and if they are
not working properly then p0780 will set.
The bad news is the repair manual Say's to replace these solenoids and if
the problem is still present then replace or overhaul the transmission because
the problem is internal.
Most repair shops are not going to take the risk and just replace the solenoids,
they will replace or overhaul the transmission.
This repair shop is on the right track but it never hurts to get a second
opinion from another shop, you may even want to try the dealer and see what
they say. You need more than one estimate for this type of repair so you
know if you are getting a fair price.
You may also want to get an estimate to replace the transmission with a
new or used one. $1600 is not a bad price for a transmission overhaul ,but
be aware some repair shops will charge you for an overhaul and install a
used transmission and you will never know the difference.
Not everyone can overhaul Honda transmissions, this is a specialty area
so be careful !
I hope this information is a help to you, let me know if you have any more
questions on this or anything else.
Thanks,
