1987 Ford Mustang-charging system problems.
Hi Steve,
I have a 1987 ford mustang GT. I have a optima red top battery that is about 2 months old.
I left my fog lights on for about 5 hours yesturday and I have had to jump start the car since then. While driving it today the car started to loose power and would not accelerate. Finally the car just shut off. I tried to jump start the car but nothing.
Could my alternator be bad? What elese besides my battery could be wrong?
Thanks for the help

Hi Brian,
It does sound like you are having a charging system problem and you will
need to have the alternator checked and see if is charging properly. The
reason the car shut off is because once the voltage gets below about 9 volts
the modules that control the fuel and ignition systems start to shut down.
They will also check the battery to make sure it is in good condition. If
the battery does not check good then you should have a warranty on it since
you just replaced it.
Some Ford models in 87 used external voltage regulators, If the voltage
regulator is bad you can replace just the regulator and not the alternator,
If your mustang has an internal voltage regulator the you will have to replace
the alternator.
Your local parts store can tell you if you have an external voltage regulator
or not.
I hope this is the information you are looking for, please ask if you have
